As of January 01, 2018 actual origination of the payment cards were mainly realized by 26 banks and JSC «Kazpost». These institutes issue and distribute payment cards of the international systems (their share consists of 99,6%) like Visa International, Master Card, UnionPay International and American Express International. Beside banks of Kazakhstan issue payment cards of the local systems like Altyn Card – JSC «Halyk Bank of Kazakhstan» and local card of Citibank Kazakhstan – JSC «Citibank Kazakhstan».
As of January 01, 2018 banks have issued 19,4 mln. payment cards and a number of card holders reached 17,0 mln. (in comparison with the situation on the same date of 2017, there is a growth of 23,6% and 19,7% respectively). The most widespread ones are the debit cards with the share of 80,4%, the share of credit cards - 16,0%. The share of debit cards with credit limit and share of prepaid cards is 2,7% and 0,9% respectively.
In December 2017 the volume of transactions with payment cards issued by the Kazakhstan originators was 1 586,6 bln. tenge (growth against December 2016 has totaled 39,6%). The number of transactions reached 53,6 mln. and increased by 53,6 % versus December 2016. At that, the number of payments and amount of the cashless payments went up to 120,5% (number of transactions 30,0 mln. transactions) and 114,5% (the volume of transactions – 411,3 bln. tenge), operations with cash withdrawals 11,0% (number of transactions – 23,6 млн. transactions) and 24,4% (the volume of transactions – 1 175,2 bln. tenge) respectively.
The main bulk of cashless payments has been made through POS-terminals (55,0% and 45,9% out of the total number of payments and volume of cashless payments) and Internet (41,5% and 47,1% respectively). Transactions of cash withdrawals have been realized mainly through ATMs (95,2% and 85,4% out of the total number of payments and volume of cash withdrawal transactions).
