The National Bank of Kazakhstan, as part of the implementation of its supervisory functions, maintains Payment Systems Registry, which is regularly updated on the National Bank’s official internet resource.

Payment systems in the Registry are divided into categories: systemically important, important, and other payment systems. The importance criteria are established by the Law of the Republic of Kazakhstan “On Payments and Payment Systems and approved by the Resolution of the Board of the National Bank dated August 31, 2016, No. 222.

As of the end of 2023, the systemically important payment system is the Interbank Money Transfer System, which is operated by the National Payment Corporation of the NBK. Through the IMTS, over 97% of payments for participants in foreign exchange market, securities market, and banking sector are processed.

The interbank clearing system is classified as an important payment system in the NBK Register according to the results of 2023. This system serves 41% of the volume of payments on the market, excluding IMTS.

Also, international card payment system Visa is also among important payment systems.

There are also 7 international money transfer systems operating in Kazakhstan, one of which is classified as an important payment system.
