On the release into circulation of a banknote with a face value of 5,000 tenge from a new “Saka Style” series

The National Bank of Kazakhstan (hereinafter the NBK) is releasing into circulation banknotes with a face value of 5,000 tenge of the new design of 2023, starting from December 25, 2023.

This is the first banknote from the new “Saka Style” series. It is based on elements of “Saka style”, which is considered the ancestor of traditional Kazakh ornament and reflects country’s heritage from the unique culture of nomads to modern Kazakhstan.

About the design and shape of the banknote

The color of the banknotes is red-orange. The front side shows:

- a branch of the "Tree of Life" with a hovering bird (Issyk Kurgan, 5-4th centuries BCE, detail of the headdress of the Golden Man, symbolizing the sacred connection between nature and beliefs);

- a DNA spiral and a stylized ornament resembling the infinity symbol, representing connection between human and nature;

- an artifact – an adornment in the form of an eagle figure (Taldy Kurgan II, 7-6th centuries BCE; the eagle as a symbol of boundless freedom, strength, and agility).

On the reverse side, a Golden Eagle is depicted against the background of a stylized shield. Behind the main image there is a circular Kazakh ornament. It symbolizes the following ideas:

  • “Shield" symbolizes the protection of values,
  • Ancient symbol represents the four cardinal points,
  • Solar sign in the center is a symbol of life.

Also, on the reverse side of the banknote, there is an artifact - a figure of a golden eagle with outspread wings (Berel Kurgans "Valley of the Kings," 8-7th centuries BCE, Eastern Kazakhstan, an element of decoration, a symbol of freedom and harmony). In the center of the banknote, as a background, there is the outline of the Kazakh ornament "infinity," inside of which a landscape view of the Charyn Canyon is depicted.

On the procedure for replacing and establishing the period of parallel circulation of banknotes

New banknotes with a face value of 5,000 tenge will go into circulation from December 25 and during the year will replace the current banknotes of the national currency with a face value of 5,000 tenge of the 2011 model (hereinafter the old model banknote).

That is, all old model banknotes will be gradually withdrawn from circulation within a year. Accordingly, during this period of parallel circulation, the population does not need to independently exchange old model banknotes for new banknotes in second-tier banks or branches of the NBK. The period for parallel circulation of banknotes of the old and new designs will be valid from December 25, 2023 to December 24, 2024.

At the same time, these banknotes will approximately go into mass circulation in March 2024, since delivery to all regions of the country and adaptation of equipment (ATMs, terminals, and other cash register equipment) require a certain time.

After the end of the parallel circulation period, that is, from December 24, 2024, all banks and Kazpost will exchange old model banknotes for new-style banknotes within 3 years, while the NBK branches will do so indefinitely.

It is important to note, that banknotes of the new design (2023) and banknotes of the old design (2011) during the period of their parallel circulation are legal tender and are required to be accepted at their face value throughout the territory of the Republic of Kazakhstan for making all types of payments and transfers, crediting to bank accounts.

They can be exchanged without restrictions in all branches of the NBK, Kazpost, second-tier banks of the country and branches of non-resident banks of Kazakhstan.

The general procedure for replacing and establishing a period of parallel circulation of banknotes in circulation when changing design of the national currency of the Republic of Kazakhstan is carried out in accordance with the resolution of the NBK Board dated December 19, 2015 No. 228 “On approval of the Rules for replacing the banknotes in circulation of the national currency of the Republic of Kazakhstan when changing their design (shape)".

We remind you that refusal to accept banknotes and coins that are legal tender is an administrative offense in accordance with the Code of the Republic of Kazakhstan on Administrative Offenses.
