As of January 01, 2016 actual origination of the payment cards were mainly realized by 26 banks and JSC “Kazpost”. These institutes issue and distribute payment cards of the international systems (their share consists of 95,2%) like Visa International, Master Card, American Express International and UnionPay International. Beside banks of Kazakhstan issue payment cards of the local systems like Altyn Card – JSC “Halyk Bank of Kazakhstan”; Smart Alem Card – JSC “Kazkommertsbank” and local card of Citibank Kazakhstan – JSC “Citibank Kazakhstan”.
As of January 01, 2016 banks have issued 17,2 mln. payment cards and a number of card holders reached 14,3 mln. (comparing the situation with the same date of 2015, there is a low of 0,7% and 5,7% respectively). The most widespread ones are the debit cards with the share of 74,7%, the share of credit cards - 13,7%. The share of debit cards with credit limit and share of prepaid cards is 2,1% and 9,5% respectively.
In December 2015 the volume of transactions with payment cards issued by the Kazakhstan originators was 896,1 bln. tenge (growth against December 2014 has totaled 2,1%). The number of transactions reached 27,7 mln. and increased by 8,8% versus December 2014. At that, the number of payments and amount of the cashless payments went up to 26,5% (number of transactions 9,0 mln. transactions) and 18,6% (the volume of transactions - 120,0 bln. tenge), operations with cash withdrawals went up to 2,0% (number of transactions -18,7 mln. transactions) and decreased on 0,1% ( the volume of transactions - 776,1 bln. tenge) respectively.
The main bulk of cashless payments has been made through POS-terminals (56,7% and 64,7% out of the total number of payments and volume of cashless payments) and ATMs (16,2% and 15,4% respectively). Transactions of cash withdrawals have been realized mainly through ATMs (95,9% and 86,3% out of the total number of payments and volume of cash withdrawal transactions).
