As of January 01, 2017 actual origination of the payment cards were mainly realized by 26 banks and JSC “Kazpost”. These institutes issue and distribute payment cards of the international systems (their share consists of 98,7%) like Visa International, Master Card, American Express International and UnionPay International. Beside banks of Kazakhstan issue payment cards of the local systems like Altyn Card – JSC “Halyk Bank of Kazakhstan” and local card of Citibank Kazakhstan – JSC “Citibank Kazakhstan”.
As of January 01, 2017 banks have issued 15,7 mln. payment cards and a number of card holders reached 14,2 mln. (comparing the situation with the same date of 2016, there is a low of 8,5% and 0,7% respectively). The most widespread ones are the debit cards with the share of 81,0%, the share of credit cards - 15,1%. The share of debit cards with credit limit and share of prepaid cards is 3,0% and 0,8% respectively.
In December 2016 the volume of transactions with payment cards issued by the Kazakhstan originators was 1 136,5 bln. tenge (growth against December 2015 has totaled 26,8%). The number of transactions reached 34,9 mln. and increased by 25,8% versus December 2015. At that, the number of payments and amount of the cashless payments went up to 50,8% (number of transactions 13,6 mln. transactions) and 59,9% (the volume of transactions - 191,8 bln. tenge), operations with cash withdrawals 13,8% (number of transactions - 21,3 mln. transactions) and 21,7%( the volume of transactions - 944,7 bln. tenge) respectively.
The main bulk of cashless payments has been made through POS-terminals (55,8% and 56,2% out of the total number of payments and volume of cashless payments) and Internet (35,3% and 31,0% respectively). Transactions of cash withdrawals have been realized mainly through ATMs (94,9% and 85,9% out of the total number of payments and volume of cash withdrawal transactions).
