As of April 01, 2023 actual origination of the payment cards were realized by 18 banks and JSC «Kazpost». These institutes issue and distribute payment cards of the international systems like Visa International, Master Card, UnionPay International, American Express International and Diners Club International. Beside banks of Kazakhstan issue payment cards of the local systems like Altyn Card – JSC «Halyk Bank of Kazakhstan», local card of Citibank Kazakhstan – JSC «Citibank Kazakhstan» and System of payment cards Kaspi.kz - JSC «Kaspi Bank».

As of April 01, 2023, 66.5 million payment cards are in circulation. The most common are debit cards, their share is 78.9%, the share of credit cards is 17.7%. Debit cards with a credit limit and prepaid cards account for 3.4%.

In March 2023, the volume of transactions using payment cards of Kazakhstani issuers amounted to 12.7 trillion tenge, the number – 916.3 million transactions. At the same time, over the same period of 2022, the number of non-cash transactions increased by 36.0% and reached up to 896.2 million transactions and by 36.3%, reaching 10.9 trillion tenge. The holders of payment cards carried out 20.2 million cash withdrawal operations in the amount of 1.8 trillion tenge. There is a decrease in the number of cash withdrawal operations compared to March 2022 by 8.3%. At the same time, the volume of cash withdrawal operations increased by 3.7%.

The main share of non-cash transactions in Kazakhstan is carried out via Internet /mobile banking (64.9% of the total number of transactions and 82.1% of the total volume of non-cash payments and money transfers) and POS terminals (35.0% and 17.6% of the total number and volume of non-cash payments and money transfers). Cash withdrawal operations were mainly carried out through ATMs (98.8% and 92.0% of the total number and volume of cash withdrawal operations).
