As of October 01, 2020 actual origination of the payment cards were realized by 21 banks and JSC «Kazpost». These institutes issue and distribute payment cards of the international systems like Visa International, Master Card, UnionPay International, American Express International and Diners Club International. Beside banks of Kazakhstan issue payment cards of the local systems like Altyn Card – JSC «Halyk Bank of Kazakhstan», local card of Citibank Kazakhstan – JSC «Citibank Kazakhstan» and System of payment cards Kaspi.kz - JSC «Kaspi Bank».
As of October 01, 2020 banks have issued 44,3 mln. payment cards and a number of card holders reached 37,2 mln. (in comparison with the situation on the same date of 2019, there is a growth of 44,9% and 36,7% respectively). The most widespread ones are the debit cards with the share of 76,5%, the share of credit cards – 20,0%. The share of debit cards with credit limit and share of prepaid cards is 2,4% and 1,2% respectively.
In January-September 2020, the volume of transactions using payment cards of Kazakhstani issuers amounted to 34,7 trln. tenge (an increase of 65,5% compared to January-September 2019). The number of transactions amounted to 2 091,5 million transactions and increased by 96,2% compared to January-September 2019.
At the same time, the number of non-cash transactions increased 2,4 times (the number amounted to 1 868,0 million units) and the amount – 2,6 times (the volume amounted to 22,8 trln. tenge). Card holders conducted 223,5 million withdrawals in the amount of 11,9 trln. tenge. There is a decrease in the number and volume of cash withdrawal operations compared to the corresponding indicator of 2019 by 21,0% and 1,6%.
The main bulk of cashless payments in Kazakhstan has been made through Internet/mobile banking (56,6% and 81,0% out of the total number of payments and volume of cashless payments) and POS-terminals (43,2% and 18,5% out of the total number of payments and volume of cashless payments). Transactions of cash withdrawals have been realized mainly through ATMs (98,8% and 92,1% out of the total number of payments and volume of cash withdrawal transactions).
